Civil War Union Army Officer. Entered the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st New Jersey Militia regiment, which was raised in April 1861 to serve only three-months. He was soon appointed as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st New Jersey Light Artillery, Battery B under Captain John Beam. When his commander was killed in action at the Battle of Malvern Hill, he was advanced to 1st Lieutenant and second-in-command of the battery. In August 1863 he was appointed as Captain and commander of the 1st New Jersey Light Artillery, Battery D. Participated in General US Grant's 1864 Overland, and frequently commanded his artillery brigade in the Army of the James' 10th Army Corps in operations against Petersburg and Richmond in the Spring and Summer of that year. Led his battery at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff, at Battery Marshall in the Union center, and in the stalemated fighting along the Bermuda Hundred line. In August 1864 he was injured by a fall from his horse, and was forced to resign from the Army. He eventually put his military training to good use through the rest of his life by serving as an inspector of arms at the Springfield, Massachusetts Federal Armory. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
