Death: Jul. 18, 1863

Civil War Union Army Officer. Colonel and commander of the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was killed leading an attack on Fort Wagner near Charleston, South Carolina, and was buried at the site. After the Civil War the remains of Fort Wagner were washed out to sea by hurricanes and the colonel's gravesite was lost. In the Oscar-winning movie "Glory" (1989), Shaw was portrayed by actor Matthew Broderick.
