Stanley Turrentine

Death: Sep. 12, 2000

Musician. Born in in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was a jazz tenor saxophonist dubbed as "The Sugar Man". He began his prolific career in the 1950s, with blues bands, going on to play with the jazz groups of Lowell Fulson, Earl Bostic and Max Roach. In the 1960s, he started working with organist Jimmy Smith and for the next decade he toured and made many soul jazz recordings. He returned to jazz in the 1980s, working with Milt Jackson, Bob James, Iris Muhammad, Ron Carter, Eric Gale and many others until his death.
