| Birth: | Mar. 3, 1931 | | Death: | Aug. 20, 2002 |  Author, scientist, surgeon. A native of New York, New York, he was one of Canada's most distinguished ophthalmologic surgeons and writers. In 1967, he was the first doctor in Canada to insert intraocular lens implants during cataract surgery, and the first doctor in Canada to perform radial keratomy surgery in 1979. Moving to Brantford, Ontario, Canada, as a young child, Kwitko later attended the Brantford Collegiate High School, and the University of Western Ontario, where he received his B.A. in English in 1955, his M.D. in 1956, and finally his M.D. in pharmacology two years later. Dr. Kwitko first served as a resident and fellow in ophthalmology at the Washington D.C. Hospital Center, before relocating to Montreal, where he became an associate professor of ophthalmology at McGill University and Chief of Opthalmology at St. Mary's Hospital, also in Montreal. He also served as a Senior Lecturer at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Secretary of the International College of Surgeons, President of the International Council on Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Member of the Board of Directors of the National Association for the Visually Handicapped, Executive Secretary of the International Society of Geographic Ophthalmology, Member of the Advisory Committee on the Eximer Laser for Health and Welfare Canada, President of the Montreal Chapter of Canadian Associates of Ben Gurion University of the Negev, and was founder and President of the Canadian Implant Society. He also co-founded the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in 1975. His honors and awards include the University of Western Ontario Honor Award in 1956, the Professor Ignacio Barraguer Award of Spain in 1970, the P. Siva Reddy Medal of India in 1980, the Senior Honor Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1989, and being made a Knight by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson to the Most Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem in 2002. Dr. Kwitko's writings include, "Eyes And The History of Modern Cataract Surgery", "Glaucoma In Infants And Children", "Geriatric Ophthalmology", "Surgery Of the Infant Eye", and the textbook, "Pseudophakia: Current Trends And Concepts", published in 1980. The Dr. Marvin L. Kwitko Scholarship in Anatomy at the University of Western Ontario and the Dr. Marvin L. Kwitko Scholarship in English at the University of Toronto were named for him. Man. I remember those hours spent waiting in Montreal for Dr. Kwitko. But at least he was competent and professional when I finally got to see him. -
