Marilyn Ann Willis Bachman
Shreveport, LA - Marilyn Ann Willis Bachman-beloved wife of 57 years, beloved mother who raised three daughters through five countries, beloved grandmother who taught us that books are our friends-died early Friday morning of complications associated with advanced dementia. She was 75.
Born in Enid, Oklahoma, on May 8, 1928, she spent her early years hearing stories from her pioneer Aunt Laura Crews. She later lived in Oregon and California, where she met her husband, Royal Bachman and became "Mrs. B." 23 Aug 1947 in Santa Ana, Orange County, California. As an Air Force wife, she lived in Germany, Pakistan, Taiwan, and Japan before settling in San Antonio, Texas, where her younger daughters graduated from high school and she began a late career with B. Dalton Bookseller.
In 1998, she retired as manager of the largest B. Dalton on the west coast and moved to San Diego, California, where her lifelong sports affections found a new and fervent home with their Chargers and Padres. Continuing to manage her household with a precise talent and gracious practicality, she mastered investment accounts, bridge, and Scrabble.
Hers is a legacy of agility with numbers and leters, fine art appreciation, and impatience with sheer sentimentality. She made decisions quickly and followed them resolutely, holding loosely to the things of this world; she thought moving quite fine and gave away a dress for every new one bought. A woman of frugality and simple delights, she was a true tactician and woman of toasts, an elegant lover of puns and practical pants.
A lifelong member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), she and her husband joined Kings Highway Christian Church upon their arrival in Shreveport in 1998.
Preceded in death by her parents, Dan Willis and Mary Willis Cox, she is survived by her husband, Royal; daughters Vicki Gilbreath and Nancy Phifer, all of Shreveport, and Karen Bunjes with her husband Karl, of Killeen, Texas; sisters Shirley Tabor of Hemet, California, and Danna McAffey of Pagosa Springs, Colorado; grandchildren Jennifer Strange and Emily Phifer of Shreveport, Loren Bunjes of Manhattan, Kansas, and Andrew and Kristin Bunjes of Killeen.
The family expresses greatest gratitude to the nursing and administrative staff at Grace Home. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Kings Highway Christian Church in Shreveport, where a memorial service will be held 3 pm Sunday, November 7.
