Gilbert D. Austin, 76, of Rutter Avenue, Forty Fort, died Sunday at homeBorn in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Charles M. and Lucita Krause Austin.

A 1937 graduate of Wilkes-Barre's E.L. Meyers High School, he was also a 1938 graduate of Wyoming Seminary and attended the Dean School of Business.

A resident of Forty Fort for the past 16 years, he previously lived in the Allentown area for 27 years.

Before his retirement in 1979, he worked for 39 years as a project engineer for the Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania.

He loved to do woodwork in his home basement shop for many years and served as a swimming official for the PIAA and NCAA for many years before his retirement.

During World War II, he served with General Omar Bradley's 12th Army Group in the European Theater of Operations as a signal officer.

He was a member of the Forty Fort United Methodist Church and its board of trustees, the Kingston Lodge 395 F&AM, Dieu Le Veut Commandary No. 45 of Wilkes-Barre and the Irem Temple.

He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels of Wyoming Valley.

Surviving are his wife, the former June E. Day; sons, David and Craig, both of Easton; Thomas, Norristown; daughter, Mrs. Amy Halloran, Exeter, N.H.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Robert, Wilmington, Del.

Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Hugh B. Hughes & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, with the Rev. Dr. William D. Lewis, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until time of service Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
