He won a Stalin Prize for his novel "Front Line Stalingrad" (1946), but after Stalin's death in 1953 he grew increasingly critical in his views. Nekrasov's novels "In the Hometown" (1954) and "Kira Georgievna" (1961) are notable works of the "Thaw" period of Soviet Literature. In the late 1960s he attacked the Brezhnev regime for trying to restore Stalinism and he was expelled from the Communist Party in 1973. The following year he settled in Paris.
