He served as the King of Samoa from 1962 to 2007, being one of the world's longest serving and oldest heads of state at the time of his death. He was educated in Auckland, New Zealand and when Samoa gained her independence in 1962 His Highness became co-head of state with Tupua Tamasese Mea'ole. After Tupua's passing in 1963, the king became the sole head of state and remained in that position until his death. He is known as one of the leaders that helped provide stability to the South Pacific region and was considered by many to be the "Father of the Two Samoa's" because of his popularity and influence in the nearby US territory, American Samoa.
