Salmon Fishing Trip Ends in Tragedy as 3 Lost Off Bay

A day of salmon fishing turned into tragedy for three generations of a local family Sunday when their small boat became trapped in the surf near the entrance to Humboldt Bay and broke up.

The body of Donald William Rahlfs, age 8, was found floating with a life vest entangled in seaweeds a quarter mile north of the North Jetty at 9:15 p.m. Sunday by Humboldt County Sheriff deputies.

Missing and presumed dead are the boy's father, William Harold Rahlfs, Jr., 30, of 2563 Vance Ave., and his grandfather, William Robinson, 47, of San Diego.

Pieces of the boat, equipment and other life vests found by the deputies seemed to indicate the two adults were not wearing life vests at the time of the accident and that the boat broke up in the heavy surf, according to the sheriff's report.

The trio left the boat launching ramp about 10 a.m. for a day of salmon fishing. When they had not returned home by 6 p.m., Rahlf's wife became alarmed and notified the Coast Guard, which sent out search vessels.

According to the sheriff's report, the three apparently were caught by Sunday evening's fog that moved in quickly and were attempting to cross the bar into the bay but missed the bay entrance.

Rahlfs had just returned from overseas duty as an ET-1 in the Navy aboard the USS Flint and was having his first leave with his family in six months at the time of the accident.

Donald Rahlfs' body was taken to Chapel of the Ferns. The search continued this morning for more wreckage and the two missing men.
