15 May 1945: Uncle Sam's Nephews: First Lieutenant (the Second Lieutenant) Richard G. Graham, 117th Infantry regiment, United States army, has been awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action Nov. 17, 1944, in Germany. He is the son of Mrs. George T. Graham, W. College avenue, and previously was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action while on patrol duty Nov 11. According to the citation, "While engaged in house to house fighting for possession of a town, the company with which Lieutenant Graham was serving encountered intense machine gun, rifles and rocket launcher fire from a mill which the enemy was using as a strong point. In the face of this fire, Lieutenant Graham and three comrades stormed the building, engaged the enemy and forced their way into the mill. This dauntless action resulted in the capture of 12 venemy prisoners and the elimination of a serious obstruction to the company's advance. The citation was signed by Major General Leland S. Hobbs.
