US Congressman, Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Born in Richmond, Virginia, he moved to Florida after completing courses in both Civil Engineering and Law, and was elected to represent Florida in the United States House of Representatives on three different occasions. First served as an At-Large Delegate upon Florida's admission to the Union, serving from 1845 to 1846, when his election to the seat was successfully contested by William H. Brockenbrough. Elected again as an At-Large Delegate, serving this time from 1847 to 1851. Re-elected for another term, he represented Florida's 1st District from 1851 to 1853. After the start of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army, and served on the staffs of Generals Sterling Price and Edmund Kirby Smith with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, PACS. After the war he continued the practice of law in St. Louis, a career interrupted by one term in the Missouri Senate. (bio by: Connie Nisinger)
