Mr. Hammel was a member of Emmanuel Community Church. He was a 1943 graduate of Huntington High School and a 1953 graduate of Huntington College. He owned and operated Hammel Floor Refinishing Service for 46 years. He taught grades 7-12 at Union High School for five years and taught at Columbia City Joint High School for 21 years. He also served as a basketball and football coach during his teaching career.

He was born Aug. 3, 1924, in Huntington, a son of Audry and Fern Wiles Hammel. He married Evelyn Mickley in Huntington on April 9, 1944. His wife survives.

Other survivors include a son, Greg Hammel, Kihei, Hawaii; two daughters, Sandra Hammel, Portsmouth, R.I., and Nancy Heffelfinger, Roanoke; a brother, Gerald Hammel, Columbia City; a sister, Evalyn Wohlford, Huntington; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Two brothers, Richard Hammel and H. Ted Hammel, preceded him in death.
