| Birth: | Aug. 25, 1977 Sacramento Sacramento County California, USA | | Death: | May 7, 2007 Las Vegas Clark County Nevada, USA | Junior Lightweight and Lightweight Champion of the World. Diego Corrales was born in Sacramento, California and had a successful amateur career compiling a 105-12 record before turning pro in 1996. He progressed through the ranks and finally got a shot at Roberto Garcia's Junior Lightweight Championship in 1999. Corrales dominated the fight and scored a 7th round TKO to claim the title. He would defend the Junior Lightweight Championship 3 times before vacating the title to challenge for Floyd Mayweather's Super Featherweight Championship in 2001. Floyd handed Diego his first defeat via 10th round TKO. After the Mayweather fight Diego spent 14 months in prison for domestic violence. He returned to the ring in 2003 and amassed several victories against top pros Joel Casamayor and Acelino Freitas. On May 7th, 2005 he faced Jose Luis Castillo in a Lightweight Championship unification fight. Both fighters went toe to toe for 9 bruising rounds until Castillo dropped Corrales twice in the 10th round. Corrales rose both times and, showing incredible courage, stormed back and pinned Castillo against the ropes with a flurry of punches and scored a 10th round TKO. The fight was named fight of the year and is regarded as one of, if not the greatest, fights of all time. Corrales would lose his next 3 fights and the title to Joel Casamayor. His career record was 40-5-0 with 33 KOs. (bio by: Soorus)
