Birth: Dec. 7, 1838
Death: May 13, 1896

Courtney was a son of Joseph and Virginia Meek. His mother was of the Nez Perce Tribe. He may have been born at Pierre's Hole (Grand Tetons), a trapper encampment in the Rocky Mountains of Nez Perce Indian country in present day Wyoming, or, at South Pass, Wyoming. He came with his parents in the first overland wagon train to Oregon. He was raised north of Hillsboro on the family donation land claim, and attended the Indian School located in Forest Grove. When one of the 1855 Indian Wars broke out, he and his father, Joseph, fought with Captains Layton & Goff. Courtney was also with Colonel Steptoe at the Indian battle at Medical Lake (eastern Washington) in 1858. During the Civil War he enlisted on Dec. 1864 in Captain E. Palmer's Company B of the Oregon 1st Regiment of Infantry. On 26 Dec 1865 he was promoted to Corporal and saw service against the Indians. He was discharged 23 Jul 1866 at Vancouver, WA. He then became a farmer in Washington County, Oregon and also held county offices there. He married 24 Sept 1878 Miss Adell Delia Newton (b 7 Jul 1851 WI) daughter of George Newton and Eliza Cathleen of New York.
He was a member of the Pioneer's Association of Portland, the G.A.R. and of the Good Templars. In 1895 he and his wife moved to his tribal land allotments near Fletcher, Idaho.
He drowned 13 May 1896 in the Willamette River. He was 57 years old.
