Rev Grover Wilburn "G.W." Griggs, Sr
Birth: Jun. 24, 1912
Death: May 21, 2001

Son of parents Jeffrey Clay and Alma Berta Marriott Griggs, he was born in Athens, Henderson, Texas on 24 Jun 1912. Raised in Red Oak, Ellis, Texas where he graduated high school and held records for the Red Oak Hawks in track & field and in baseball. He was later scouted by the professional baseball team the Fort Worth Steers, but passed that opportunity up to help his father work the farm. He and his brother Coil would also work for themselves at their family owned gas station called The Good Ole Boys. He then later married Fannie Eythl Parten and had their first son Grover Wilburn Griggs Jr. or as we know him by (Junior). Then they had another son Rodney Eugene Griggs. While living around the depression and the coming of WWII was about, Grover and Fannie's son Junior listed in the military. When the time of the war Fannie fell sick and passed away right around the time of the war in 1944. While eveyone was celebrating knowing the war was about to end, he sat in his house sad. [Even when he was in his eighties he would still be sad around the holidays because he missed Fannie.]

Then he met Mary Louise Esselman in 1945. They got to know each other for about a month and Grover asked for her hand in marriage. They were married in the late year of 1945. He surrendered his life to the ministry and later had three girls Nancy, Debra, and Cathy. He has worked hard preaching about salvation to others. He was an evangelic preacher who preached in over 130 churches and many denominations. They moved from place to place going where God called them to go and he finally decided to settle down in Shelby County. He sold cars and was a fishing guide at the "Fishing Capital of the World" Huxley Bay. He even helped out some professional fishermen find the best spots to fish. Years later even though he was retired, he still preached the gospil until his illness. He loved his family and loved fishing. In the later part of his life he chose Center, Shelby, Texas as his home where he later fell to illness and passed away on 21 May 2001. In all his time he has made an impact on everyone whom he has met. Most of all he is now in Heaven preparing for all of us to come home and be with God, Jesus, and Him.
