Frank Carlyle Austin, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, returned home to his Heavenly Father and sweetheart, Louise, August 19, 2005, while surrounded by his loving family. He had just celebrated his 89th birthday on Sunday.
He was born August 14, 1916, in Lehi, Utah, the son of Alice Schofield and William Austin. We will miss his funny jokes and many stories of his life-learning experiences. When he was a young boy, his father passed away, and he worked thinning sugar beets to help support the family. At 16, he worked as a chuck wagon cook for a sheep herding camp. He would describe the meals he prepared with such detail, it made your mouth water for a taste.
He fell in love and married his sweetheart, Louise Hamnet, June 4, 1937. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this past June 4th. Louise passed away July 30th, less than three weeks before him. Frank was a town marshal and also a city judge for Alpine.
He helped build Geneva Steel and worked there for 30 years, until his retirement. While living in Alpine, he served in many church callings, including the Old Folks Committee. He was a master carpenter (could build anything) and a seasoned cook. He loved life, telling stories, and spending time with his family and friends, camping, fishing and hunting in the mountains above Alpine.
He has taught us the value of hard work, love and appreciation of family. We were always amazed at his ability to accomplish anything he set his mind to. The most precious of all, was to care for his sweetheart with love and tenderness. He will be greatly missed by all who knew this soft-spoken, gentle giant of a man.
He is survived by four sons and three daughters: Karleen (Jay) Wilson, Lionell (Vicki) Austin, Lowell Austin, Diane (Ron) Smith, Donna (LeEarl) Healey, Mardee (Glenda) Austin, Frank (Eddie) Austin; 46 grandchildren, 104 great grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Pearl Smith; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sons, Alma and Thayne; daughter, Phyllis; his parents, five sisters, three brothers, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild.
At Frank's request, graveside services will be held, Wednesday, August 24th, at 11 a.m., in the Alpine City Cemetery. A viewing will be held at Anderson & Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North, American Fork, Tuesday evening, from 6-8 p.m.; and, Wednesday morning, from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
A special thanks to Janice, Applegate Hospice; Steve and Gail Holbrook and family; members of the Lehi 9th Ward; and the many neighbors and friends for their kindness, friendship, and unconditional love. We will love and miss you, Dad. Give Mom a kiss from us.
