J. Paul Doerr, 83, of 540 Protzman Rd., Summit Township, former city and county public official, died at 6:05 a.m. today in his home.
Mr. Doerr had served Butler County as treasurer from 1938 to 1944, and as county controller from 1966 to 1974.
He was Butler City controller from 1928 to 1932, and has also served as auditor for the Butler School Board from 1928 to 1936.
When he took office in 1938 at the age of 38, he was the youngest county treasurer ever elected. Since at the time he was not permitted to succeed himself, he continued as deputy treasurer for two more years when the treasurer-elect died in office.
Mr. Doerr had been a partner in the Doerr and Rishor News Agency from 1945 until his election as county controller in 1966, and after his retirement from public office in 1973, worked part-time at the agency he helped to found.
Mr. Doerr had represented Summit Township on the Butler Area Schools Joint Building Authority as treasurer and vice chairman and on the high school Stadium Authority.
He studied accounting at Butler Business College and La Salle Extension University, and in his earlier years served as a payroll clerk and cost accountant at Forged Steel Wheel Company (now Armco), and as bookkeeper and auditor for Leedom and Worrall Wholesale Grocery Company.
Mr. Doerr was a member of the Community Lutheran Church of Penn Township, and Victory Lodge 694, F & AM.
Born in Butler, Oct. 27, 1899, he was the son of George and Lillie Keefer Doerr.
His first wife, Liona Oesterling Doerr, died Jan. 28, 1943.
Surviving are his wife, Alice Portman Doerr, whom he married Feb. 10, 1944; three sons, Attorney Donald D. Doerr of Butler, John Paul Doerr Jr. of Miami, Fla., and Attorney Thomas J. Doerr of Butler; four daughters, Mary Ann Kirch of Butler, Mrs. Richard A. (Gretchen) Cohen of Elizabeth Township, Mrs. Mark (Susan) Munsell of Philadelphia, and Mrs. David M. (Jean) O'Donnell of Butler; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Helen Bernlohr of York, Pa., Dorothy Doerr of Boca Raton, Fla. and Mrs. Margaret Tencate of DeLand, Fla.; a brother Ralph Doerr of Butler; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

DOERR-Friends of J. Paul Doerr of 540 Protzman Rd., Summit Township, who died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1982, will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the funeral home, with the Rev. Lisa A. Ubbelohde, pastor of Community Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Thompson-Miller.

J. Paul Doerr, 83, of 540 Protzman Rd., Summit Township, former city and county public official, died at 6:05 a.m. today in his home.
