Famous Holocaust Victim. Mother of Peter van Pels. When "The Diary of Anne Frank" was published in 1947, Auguste van Pels was given the name "Petronella van Daan". Born in Buer, Auguste Rottgen wed Hermann van Pels on December 5, 1925. One year later, their only child, Peter van Pels, was born. The van Pels relocated to Amsterdam in 1937. In July of 1942, the family went into hiding with the Frank family in Otto Frank's office building. Throughout their time in hiding, Auguste was flirtatious with Otto Frank and continuously hinted at an Annex wedding between Peter van Pels and Anne Frank. On August 4, 1944, an informant revealed the location of the Secret Annex whereupon the Gestapo raided it and discovered them. She was transported to Euterpestraat Gestapo Headquarters and imprisoned at Amsteweensweg until August 8, 1944. Auguste spent her days at Westerbork transit camp until she was transported to Auschtiwz on September 3, 1944. There she was separated from her husband and son, both whom she would never set eyes on again. She was assigned to a work labour group until she was relocated to Bergen-Belsen on November 26, 1944. Then on February 6, 1945, she became a slave labourer for the Raguhn labour unit and was evcuated to Buchenwald in eastern Germany. The Raguhn unit was eliminated on April 8, 1945, whereupon all survivors were marched to Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. Historians are unsure of the exact death date for Auguste vn Pels after April 8, 1945. They believe she either died during the "Buchenwald-Theresienstadt Death March" or shortly after arriving at Theresienstadt. (bio by: Genosleuth29)
