Seattle Mayor. He served as mayor of Seattle, Washington from April 6, 1896 until July 1897. He was appointed mayor by the Seattle City Council to fill the unexpired term of Mayor Frank D. Black, who had resigned after only one month in office. He was a prominent city attorney and real estate developer, credited with founding Seattle's Green Lake neighborhood, and establishing the Green Lake Trolley Line, linking the Seattle communities of Green Lake and Fremont. In 1884 he was elected to the position of Probate Judge of King County. In July 1897 he abruptly submitted his resignation as mayor of Seattle to pursue gold interests in the far north, as part of Alaska's famous Klondike gold rush. The former mayor died in Seattle from an intestinal ailment at the age of 59. (bio by: Nils M. Solsvik Jr.)
