Charles Wentworth Roberts
Birth: Oct. 22, 1828
Death: Mar. 23, 1898

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Old Town, Main, he was a prominent local lumber merchant when he answered to the call for volunteers at the start of the Civil War. He enlisted in the Union Army as a Lieutenant Colonel of 2nd Maine Volunteer Infantry, which was the first unit from Maine to enter the war. In 1862, he was promoted Colonel in command of the 2nd Maine Infantry Regiment and while leading his men at the Second Battle of Bull Run, he had his horse shot out from under him. He was forced to retire from active duty due to ill health in 1863. For his service during the war, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he returned to his business interests and was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Maine in 1875. He died at age 69 in Bangor, Maine. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
