Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. The son of 15th United States Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, he was commissioned as Major of the 18th Maine Volunteer Infantry on July 11, 1862. He served with his regiment through the winter of 1862 to 1863 (and through the re-designation of his unit to the 1st Maine Volunteer Heavy Artillery), then was transferred to the United States Army Adjutant General Department on April 26, 1863. He served first in this capacity as the Assistant Adjutant General of the II Division of the III Army Corps in the Army of the Potomac, then as an Assistant Adjutant General on the Staff of Brigadier General Albion P. Howe. He was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, and Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services". His brother, Cyrus Hamlin, became a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the war. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
