He began his service in the Union Army on November 15, 1861, when he was commissioned as Captain, and mustered in as commander of Company H, 12th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He served in that duty until June 25, 1863, when he was commissioned as a Colonel of Volunteers, and assigned to command the 81st United States Colored Troops. He then led them for over a year, before resigning on July 29, 1864. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services". (bio by: Russ Dodge)
