Before becoming a Rough Rider with Teddy Roosevelt & charging up San Juan Hill, Pvt Daniels was a buffalo hunter, gambler and in the 1880s, an assistant city marshal in Dodge City. Daniels, as a lawmnan, also paritcipated in the bloody Gray County Kansas War. Just before enlisting Daniels was a policeman and gambler in Cripple Creek CO. After serving with the Rough Riders Daniels settled in the Nogales AZ area and invested in mining properties. In 1901 President Roosevelt appointed Daniels a US Marshal in AZ. After it was discovered that Daniels, when he was 18, had served time in a Wyoming prison for horse theft, he was forced to resign. In 1904 the governor, another Roosevelt appointee and fellow Rough Rider, appointed Daniels superintendent of the territorial prison. In 1906 Roosevelt believed Daniels had atoned for his youthful lawlessness and once again appointed him a US Marshal. Daniels appointment was supported in letter of references by Senator Frederick Dodge, former Wells Fargo Agent & Rough Rider) & William (Bat) Masterson. Bat Masterson described Daniels as a "courageous officer." Daniels served as marshal until the end of Roosevelt's term. On July 15, 1908, Daniels married a school teacher named Mrs. Searys. After being a US Marshal Daniels became the Indian Agent for the Menominee tribe in Wisconsin. He did not like the job and returned to Arizona and settled in the Tucson area.
