Oral tradition says was with Capt. Schudder's Company. "He went with Benedict Arnold to Quebec. He nearly died of starvation during the journey home. When not far from home, he stopped at a farm house and asked for food. He was about to be turned away as an ordinary beggar when the daughter of the house, a girl of fifteen, thought his tattered head gear resembled a soldier's cap and asked him if he was a soldier. He told them his story and they were glad to give him the best the house afforded. So impressed was the young soldier with the thoughtfulness of the girl, that afterward he returned to her home, courted and married her. Her name was Margaret Osborn."
