Death of Mrs. J. C. Walton
Mrs. J. C. Walton [Louise Jane Shannon] was born Nov. 18, 1839, and married to J. C. Walton Sept. 21, 1858.  To this union was born eight children, two boys and six girls.  One boy and one girl are dead.  Mr. and Mrs. Walton moved to Texas in 1874 and have been living in Brown County for about thirty years.  Mrs. Walton joined the Missionary Baptist Church at the age of fourteen and has lived a spotless Christian life.  She is survived by her husband and seven (sic) children,  all of whom were present at her funeral.  Mr. Hugh Walton, from New Mexico;  Mrs. Duke Herring, from Coke County; Mrs. Kate Wilson, from Brownsville;  Mrs Frank Rutledge, from Brookesmith, and Mrs. Henry Brooks and Mrs. J. A. Swinson (sic), of Bangs.

Mrs. Walton was sick only a few days, and died Sunday, April 28, 1916.  All was done a skilled physician and good nursing could do, but pneumonia in a severe form at her extreme old age did its fatal work in a few hours.

Mrs. Walton was the most affectionate, the most indulgent and loving mother we have ever known.  Her children, her grand children and great grand children spent many happy hours in her sweet and pleasant home, a home she made so beautiful with her loving hands.  She not only raised her own children but three or four orphan children.  Mr. Mark Rhodes, an orphan nephew was raised and loved almost as much as their own child.  Also Mrs. Jesse  Avinger was made an orphan when only a babe by the death of her mother, but Grandma Walton took her and raised her and lavished both a mothers and grandmothers love on her, for which she fully returned an equal share and is now broken hearted and grieved as much so as any child she has.

Our hearts reach out in sympathy for these bereaved ones, for who knows as well how to sympathize as one who has known the depths of a sweet loving mothers love as they who have suffered the same bereavement.

The remains were laid to rest in the Mukewater cemetery Tuesday evening.

The services were conducted by Bro. A. B. Jenkins, her pastor, assisted by Bro. S. B. Green.  Bro. Jenkins read suitable passages of scripture and spoke heartfelt words of comfor to the bereaved, also admonished they be saved to be ready as was dear sister Walton when the Summons comes "To Come up Higher".
