INS Dakar Memorial
Birth: unknown
Death: unknown

This memorial is located within Israel's National and Military Cemetery Mount Herzel, Jerusalem. It was erected in honor of the crew whom lost their lives on the ship's maiden voyage in the Mediterranean Sea. "Dakar", meaning "Swordfish" in Hebrew, was purchased by Israel with two sister submarines from the British Navy in 1965. On January 9, 1968, the Dakar departed from Portsmouth harbor, Britain, en route to its home harbor of Haifa, Israel. The submarine was manned by 69 crewmembers and commanded by Lieutenant Commander Ya'akov Ra'anan. The Dakar, reported her last position on January 25, 1968, then vanished and was never heard from again. After the Dakar failed to respond to open radio transmissions, the Navy Command launched extensive searches. The searches were conducted by the Israeli Navy, US Navy and with international cooperation. With no results the search was finally called off in February, declaring all lost. The exact fate of this vessel remains a mystery to this day. In 1999, the Dakar submarine was discovered by Nauticus Inc. 500 km west to Haifa. The submarine's drawbridge was pulled up, restored and was set in display at the front of the Haifa Navy Museum in 2003.  (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
