Helen Margaret (Watkins) Burr was born in Cody; Park County, Wyoming on Friday; August 18, 1916. Helen was the second daughter to Myrtle (Cretsinger) and Loren Watkins. They left Cody and returned to Coon Rapids; Carroll County, Iowa, following the death of her father, who died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. Helen grew up in Coon Rapids, Iowa, then attended Cottey College in Nevada; Vernon County, Missouri, where she developed life-long friendships with sisters of the PEO. In 2006, she re-united with 4 of her sisters there for the 70th anniversary of their graduation. From Cottey College, Helen attended State University of Iowa where she received her Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1940 and met Charles L. Burr, an intern in the College of Medicine. They wed in 1941 then endured the long separation while Chuck served as a medical officer in World War II. Following the war, they settled in Des Moines; Polk County, Iowa and bought a house in the Beaverdale neighborhood, where they lived the remaining years of their lives. Helen bore 3 sons: Stephen Charles (married to Kristy Hibbs) of Tama; Tama County, Iowa. Christopher Robert (married to Beth Birtwistle) of Cedar Rapids; Linn County, Iowa and Frederick Clyde (married to Mary Ellen Ryan) of Des Moines; Polk County, Iowa. Helen resumed her career working at Planned Parenthood of Iowa, Iowa Methodist School of Nursing, then completed a Master of Science degree in Psychology at Drake University and worked 17 years at Broadlawns Hospital as a Clinical Psychologist. Helen was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, PEO and the American Psychological Association. She loved her family and was devoted to them all. To be her friend was a life-long relationship. She accepted everyone for who they were and was rarely judgmental toward others. She loved poetry, history, politics and people. She believed in the goodness of others and shared hers willingly. Helen Margaret (Watkins) Burr, age 90, passed away on Tuesday; April 24, 2007, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Those left to mourn her passing are her sons, her sister: Ruth Woods of Coon Rapids; Carroll County, Iowa. Four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and many, many loving friends. Helen was preceded in death by her husband: Charles, grandson: Adam Burr and dear friend: Ralph Dorner. Visitation begins after 3:00 p.m. on Friday; April 27, 2007 at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday; April 28, 2007 at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity or Planned Parenthood of Iowa.
