Actor. A leading actor of Russian Romanticism, he joined the Bolshoi Theatre at St. Petersburg, Russia in 1820, then moved to the Alexandrine Theatre in 1832. A rival to Pavel Mochalov, Russia's greatest actor of his time, he excelled in the numerous productions of Shakespeare's and Schiller's plays, Following his death at the age of 53, he was originally interred in Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery, but later his remains were relocated to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery.
