ALEX PAPPIN
Alex Pappin was born in Neosho County , Kansas Territory on August 9Th, 1859. The son of Alexander Laforce ( part Osage Indian) and Elizabeth Jane (Blythe) Papin.(part Cherokee Indian) At the time of his birth he had two older sisters, Julia Ann (1854) and Martha Elizabeth (1856). He also had two half siblings. Peter LaForce and Mary Papin. In 1860, his brother John Pappin was born. His two sisters Julia and Mary died young. So Alex and John grew up very close to each other. In 1862, his father Alexander "Laforce" Papin died , in 1863 his mother Elizabeth died. I am unsure who raised the two boys, though it is rumored that they went to a Catholic orphanage after the death of their mother.
It is not known when Alex and John came to Pawhuska. It is known that they both married about 1882 and lived in Pawhuska at that time. Alex first married Amanda "Mandy" Lane. Their son James was born in 1883 in Indian Territory now Dewey, Oklahoma. They also had a daughter Susan born about 1885. Mandy died on 23 Feb 1885 and both she and baby Susan are buried in the Leno Cemetery (an old Delaware Indian Cemetery) located near Dewey.Mandy was 22 years of age.
Alex's second marriage was to Mary Colston. Mary was a half sister to John's wife, Susan Pappin. Mary was part Cherokee Indian. The daughter of Richard and Millie Jane called "Jennie" (Downing) Colston. They had two children, Grace born 18 May 1890 and Jesse born 1892. Little Jesse died in 1894 of what was called brain fever.( Brain Fever is also called :Encephalitis, an acute inflammation of the brain, commonly caused by a viral infection.) Mary died 8 Nov 1895, at the age of 25 . Both she and little Jesse share a stone in the Jesse Creek Cemetery, located in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
Alex's third marriage was to Myrtle Littlewolf born about 1871. She had two children by Alex. David Pappin, who died young and Herbert A Pappin born 28 July 1897. Myrtle died 25 April 1899 and was buried in Jesse Creek Cemetery. She was later moved to Pawhuska City Cemetery by Herbert to rest near him. She was 18 years of age when she died.
Alex's fourth marriage was to Mary Elizabeth "Mollie Eads. She was the daughter of Francis and Mary (Gaby) Eads. Alex and Mary had eight children:
Nora, Letta, Franklin, Roosevelt , Floyd, Gladys, Mildred and Mary Louise. Mollie died in Oregon at the age of 90.
Alex died on 20 Sept 1929, in Pawhuska at the age of 70. He is buried in the Pawhuska City Cemetery, Pawhuska, Oklahoma.
