Prudence was a widow when she crossed the plains, her husband having died. History has his name as Gustavus Miles. He was called in the early days of the church on a mission to England. They had no word of him after he left for his mission until three months later when his trunks were sent home by the Transport Company with the information that he had taken sick, died and was buried at sea. while on his mission. {Samuel Jr. records that his father Samuel Sr. died in St. Louis, Missouri December 22, 1847.} The Saints were going west to the Great Salt Lake Valley. Prudence wanted to go and wanted all her family to go with her. Her son William Marks Miles was her youngest child (Im just typing this as a see it. But I see two younger children. Noted by Camille Barker), twenty one years of age. He was a bar-tender in a saloon, and made a good wage. He couldn't decide to give up his job and go but thought he should stay and send the family money to help them over the hard times they were sure to have. But his mother wanted him to go and he felt so uncertain and anxious over it, that he thought of it all the time and prayed about it. He said that one day he was walking across a field with his head lowered feeling very depressed and uncertain when a white dove lit so close to his feet it astonished him and then it flew directly west. He felt that it had been sent as an answer to his prayer. He came west with his mother. He was one of the stalwart young men called by Brigham Young to go back to assist other companies to cross the plains and made the tortious journey three times.

This is probably her headstone or the headstone is her sons daughter named Prudence J. Did Prudence have a middle name? Did her son have a daughter named Prudence J? Did her husband die on a mission. Who is Gustave Miles? Oh the many questions.
