Shirley May Burtenshaw Fortner, 93, of Idaho Falls, passed away May 25, 2018, at her home surrounded by her family. She was cared for by her loving family and Encompass Hospice.

Shirley was born May 6, 1925, in Shelton, Idaho, to Benjamin Burtenshaw Jr. and Eva Augusta Martin Burtenshaw. She grew up and attended schools in Shelton and Idaho Falls and graduated from Idaho Falls High School.

On September 2, 1943, she married James Waldo Fortner in Idaho Falls. To this union were born five children, Bonnie, John, Julie, Neil, and Trish. Shirley was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker.

Her family meant the world to her. Every single one of her children, eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren knew they were loved and cherished. Birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions were never forgotten, always celebrated with a card, family, and food. Shirley was a wonderful cook! Her family will forever remember her homemade cakes, popcorn, cheesy potatoes, and the get-togethers at the family home.

Shirley was always on the go. She enjoyed many activities including bowling, square dancing, and traveling all over the world with her husband and family.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 74 years, Jim Fortner of Idaho Falls, ID; daughter, Bonnie Serman of Boise, ID; son, John Fortner of Ammon, ID; daughter, Julie (Steve) Buttars of Idaho Falls, ID; son, Neil Fortner of St. George, UT; daughter, Trish Morris of Idaho Falls, ID; brother, William Alfred (Marlene)Burtenshaw, St. George, UT; brother, Don Martin (Beverly) Burtenshaw, Terreton, ID; sister, Leta (the late Carl) Carlson, Idaho Falls, ID; sister, Marva (the late Kay) Blatter, Rexburg, ID; sister, Cheryl (the late R.I. Sr.) Clayton, Idaho Falls, ID; sister, Janis Butikofer, Idaho Falls, ID; sister, Nelda (Larry) Hammer, Ashton, ID.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben & Eva Burtenshaw, and brothers Mardee & Larry Burtenshaw.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Shirley’s name to Encompass Hospice, 3686 Washington Pkwy, Idaho Falls, ID 83404.

A Celebration of Love will be held in June.
