Beech Grove (Marion County)
Ruth Belle (Crider) Ridlen was born in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana; the fourth of five children born to Oscar O'Gusta and Lula Margaret (Gideon) Crider
her siblings being: William Earl Crider, Lillian Muriel (Crider) Royalty, Helen M. (Crider) Morris, and Lulu Alma Crider.
She was united in marriage to Meredith Louis Ridlen on June 13, 1925, in Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana. To this union, three known children were born: Earl Louis Ridlen, Thurman Lloyd Ridlen, and Donald Meredith Ridlen. Following their divorce in the late 1940's/early 1950's, she never remarried.
She was employed by Indiana Bell as a long distance operator for 25 years before her retirement in 1971. She was a member of Centerary Christian Church, Telephone Pioneers of America and Senior Citizens of Beech Grove. She was an avid book reader, doll collector, and loved to sew, making much of the clothing that us kids wore. Gr. Grandmomie also taught me to embroidery at a very young age as well as crochet; both interesting feats as she was a "south paw", and I a "righty". She made several attempts to teach me to sew on the sewing machine, but I never picked that up.
She answered the summons to the spirit world, from St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove, Marion County, Indiana, at the age of 73y, 4m, 28d; cause of death was Cardiopulmonary Arrest caused by Pulmonary Edema. She was also an Insulin-dependent Diabetic. She was interred on December 11, 1982.
I have many, many fond memories of my Gr. Grandmomie, from dressing up (including white gloves, patent leather shoes and purse) and going downtown, to birthdays at the L.S. Ayers Tea Room and playing dishes with cut-out food from magazines to hanging her wrought iron trivets on the wall of her new apartment. Mostly, I remember always spending the Thanksgiving weekend to put up her Christmas decorations. Gr. Grandmomie loved Christmas!
I remember one of her fondest wishes was to see her first gr. gr. grandchild. While she didn't make it, it didn't stop me from getting as far as picking up the phone and dialing her number to tell her what new and wonderful thing my daughter (her first gr. gr. granddaughter) had done today, before I remembered that she was no longer here. I loved her so much and miss her with every beat of my heart!
