Cause of death: heart attackHe was a successful German dressage and eventing rider and politician ( CDU ). He was one of the most successful summer Olympians. Until the Olympic Summer Games in 2000 , he was for many years the most successful Olympian in Germany, until he was replaced by Birgit Fischer. Until today Klimke is the victorious dressage rider of the world. He was awarded by the sports federation of the city of Münster at the Ball of Sports in 1974, 1981, 1982 and 1988 as Sportsman of the Year. The Sports Confederation of Münster honored him in 2000 with the Sports Academy. In 2008 Reiner Klimke was inducted into the Hall of Fame of German Sports . He was also the bearer of the Silver Laurel Leaf and the Order of Merit of North Rhine-Westphalia.
