According to military and pension records, Washington, DC, Matthew enlisted at age 20 in Marietta, Ohio, 1865 in Company D, 174 Regiment, Ohio Infantry. His enlistment lasted for one year. He was described as having sandy or auburn hair, fair complexion, blue eyes, 5 ft. 8 in tall. On June 28, 1865 he was transferred to Co. G 181st Ohio Infantry, rank: Private. In 1881, he applied for and was granted an invalid pension for an illness that continued after his discharge. In 1912, after his death, his widow, Rosamond was granted a widow's pension, $30 per month for life.
