Death: Feb. 18, 1959

Clarence Mathis was the youngest of six children born to Randolph "Coon" & Nora Emily (nee Guthrie) Mathis. He was born out in the country of Lee County, TX. It was there he and his siblings grew up and all learned to work on the family farm, raising cotton, peanuts, sweet potatoes and watermelons along with the garden plot that provided daily vegetables. They all learned the value of hard work!

Clarence met the love of his life, Clara L. "Sit" Jensen, daughter of Charlie Amos & Carrie Bell (nee Phears/Clemons) Jensen at a local dance when she was about 16 or 17. They finally got married a few years later, on September 30, 1933 in Lee County.

They started a family in Lee County and rented some relative's land where they began their own little farm and set about making their lives. They ultimately had four boys.

They finally left the farm when subsistence farming became nearly impossible to provide a livelihood, in 1944. The family made their way, along with other relatives, down along the coast in Galveston County where the burgeoning petrochemical industry was producing jobs. Clarence made a career in painting, working for various plants as a contractor.

Tragedy would strike in 1952, when after a common rainfall in the days before OSHA was heard of and rules did not exist, Clarence ominously climbed into a pipe rack some 30-35 feet in the air to begin his work (before the days of safety belts). He slipped on a wet pipe and grabbed for the nearest thing - a live electrical line, shocking him off and causing a 35 foot fall to the concrete below, where he sustained massive injuries.

He was not expected to survive the night, but a night turned into a full day, then several days. He ended up living, but broke many bones and endured massive internal injuries, including brain damage. He lived as an invalid for 6.5 years, never walking or really speaking again, having the mind of a 3-5 yr old.

His loving and devoted wife "Sit" took complete care of him at home, with some occasional day nursing help, for those last 6.5 years!!

Clarence finally succumbed to stomach cancer in League City, Galveston County, on February 18, 1959. He was taken "home" to Lee County for burial at his final resting place in the Lexington Cemetery.
