Tail Gunner on B-17G 'I'll Get By' which was shot down on 2 Aug 44 at Airan, France on his 23rd combat mission. He bailed out, broke his ankle on landing, was captured and made a POW. He was imprisoned in Stalag Luft IV, Gross Tychow, Germany.

Services for Mr. Walter James Collyer, age 75, of Rocky Branch, LA, were held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 18, 2001 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in West Monroe, LA, with Father Joe Puthuppally officiating. Interment follwed at Rocky Branch Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, West Monroe, LA.

Mr. Collyer died on a Tuesday at his residence in Rocky Branch, LA.

He was a member of St. Paschal's Catholic Church in West Monroe. He retied as a Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the American ex-P.O.W.'s and the Northeast Louisiana Chapter of ex-P.O.W.'s. He also was a member of Military Order of Purple Heart, 95th Bomb Group (H) Association, and Stalag Luft IV.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Collyer of Rocky Branch; four children: Margaret Collyer of Rocky Branch, Kathleen Effenson and husband Lee of Windermere, FL, William Collyer of West Monroe and Patricia Roan of Rocky Branch; sister: Elizabeth Scanlan of New Smyma Beach, FL; brother: Richard Collyer and wife Eleanor of Staten Island, NY; six grandchildren: Jennifer Collyer, Marvin Effenson, Stanley Effenson, Brett Effenson, Joshua Roan and Jacob Roan.

Pallbearers were Lee Effenson, Jeffery Roan, Marvin Effenson, Joshua Roan, Philip Ramsey and Calvin Ramsey. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Mark Rubin, Dr. Don Hammett, Dr. David Raines and Dr. Robert Marshall.

A special appreciation for the nurses and chaplain of Glenwood Hospice. Memorials may be made to Glenwood Hospice in West Monroe, LA.
