Birth: Sep. 8, 1864
Death: May 29, 1924

June 4, 1880 census: laboring at mines four months
1900 census: he was living with his father and was a day laborer. He was still single.

Charles M. Kiehl was confirmed in the St. James English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ashland on May 28, 1882. His brothers George E. Kiehl and John A. Kiehl were also confirmed on that date.

1905-1906 Ashland City Directory: "Charles Kiehl, lab. 3."

Charles is reported as living in Ashland on his father's April 1917 death certificate and on his brother's November 1923 death certificate.

1920 Census: Living at 814 Chestnut St., Ashland, Pa. Working at the Mines.

Charles is buried at St. Joseph's/St. Mauritius Cemetary located in Ashland just off 25th Street at the top of town. It is a clean and orderly cemetery situated in an open meadow. His grave is found at the end of the first row at the bottom of the hill. Tombstone:

KIEHL
1864 Charles M. 1924
1867 Mary E. 1950

JOHNSON
1906 Bert J. 1971
1907 Eleanor E. 1979

Records in Schuylkill County Historical Society erroneously describes the above cemetery as follows, "this cemetery is not in the best condition, and lacking proper care. Evidence of vandalism is present, with stones willfully destroyed, and also, there are many toppled and broken stones, along with many unmarked graves. Looking over the cemetery, it is evident there is no set pattern of layout."

The above description matches that of the cemetary of the St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church of Girardville. This old cemetery is on the south side of route 54, about a 1/4-mile east of Girardville. It is difficult to find, overgrown and in disrepair on the side of a mountain. This church later continued burials in the cemetery of the Christ Church in Fountain Springs just off route 61. I visited both cemeteries in summer 1997. The descriptions of the two cemeteries were transposed in the Schuylkill County Historical Society records.

The death certificate of Charles Kiehl Jr. list Catherine McCormick and Charles Kiehl, parents. Everything indicates that Charles only married once and his wife's name was Mary. Mary states that she gave birth to his three children in the 1910 census. Charles's niece Marion Bauchop remembered that Charles got married late in life. His wife was "very religious" and was how related to Cardinal Dougherty and he converted to Catholicism when he married her.

1930 census: Charles Kiehl [Jr.], 24, son, living with Mary Kiehl, 55, mother, and sister Elenore.
