During WWII, he served in the 388th bomber group as a pilot in the European Theatre flying a B-17 "Flying Fortress". On May 28, 1944 during his 13th mission, he, his crew and plane received heavy casualties and such damages that forced them into a crash landing outside of Blauekapel, Holland just 8 days before the allied forces invaded Europe. He and the surviving crew members were subsequently captured and were held as prisoners of war by the German forces until freed by the allies. After recuperation he returned to duty and served as part of the occupational forces in Japan.
On September 6, 1952, he married Mary Jane Taylor. They settled in New Castle, DE until 1962, when they moved into the Longwood area of North Wilmington, where they raised their 3 children. He resided there until he moved the PA in 2004. Mr. Codding was a career insurance agent for Northwestern Mutual Insurance and had obtained the level of Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU). Mr. Codding enjoyed golf and bowling. He was a member of American Legion Post #21 of Wilmington, the 388th Bomber Group Association, and the Concord Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, DE.
He was the husband of the late Mary Jane Taylor, and is survived by his brother, Leroy Emerson Codding, Jr. of Aptos, CA; 3 children - a daughter, Priscilla C. Herr-Neckar (Merrit) of Holmes, PA and 2 sons, A. Miles, Jr. (Juli) of Hockessin, DE and John R. (Cathy) of Wilmington, DE; a granddaughter, Carrie T. Tequianes (Juan) of Oxford, PA; 2 grandsons, John M. and Peter J., both of Hockessin, DE; 4 step grandchildren, Jamie, Justin, Jillian and Hunter Patton, all of Wilmington, DE; 3 great grandchildren, Nicholas, Samuel and Carmen Tequianes, all of Oxford, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 10th, at 10 am at the CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE. The family will receive visitors at 9:30 am. Interment with full military honors to follow the service in Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Cemetery.
