Best remembered as the very first actor to play 'James Bond' in a 1954 adaptation of "Casino Royale," on the television series "Climax!" He was born Robert Haakon Nielson into a Scandinavian family. He began acting at age 15. He attended University of California at Berkeley. After graduation in 1941 he was signed to a contract with MGM. He made his screen debut that year in the film "Shadow of the Thin Man." During World War II he served his country as a member of the armed forces. He debuted on the Broadway Stage in 1943. He appeared in plays that include: "Winged Victory," "Light Up the Sky," and "The Rat Race." During the 1950s he worked on countless television programs that include "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," and "Climax!" One episode of "Climax!" featured him in the title role as 'James Bond.' In 1963 he starred in the film version of ""Mary, Mary" a play he starred in on Broadway. In 1970 he appeared in the film "Airport." He continued work on television and stage throughout the 1970s. In 1978 he was nominated for a Tony Award for "The Act." In 1980 he could be seen as ‘Stuart Ullman' in director Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining." The 1980s saw Barry on countless television shows which include; "Dallas," "Fantasy Island," and "Murder, She Wrote." In the early 1990s he completely retired from acting. (bio by: David)
