Henry Pryor Almand, Sr. was one of the large family of Thomas Almand, of North Carolina, and his wife Nancy David. Henry was born in Elbert Co., GA, but when he was still small, his parents moved to Newton Co., settling about ten miles west of Covington.
On 4 Mar 1862, Henry P. Almand, of Newton County, Georgia, enlisted as a private in Co. F, 42nd Georgia Infantry. He was wounded (lost three fingers) on 30 November 1864 at Franklin, Tennessee.
Although Henry P. Almand had little formal education, he prospered as a farmer and a merchant. Early in his first marriage, he joined the Baptist church and eventually was ordained as a deacon. He also was a Master Mason.
Henry P. Almand was married twice, first on 25 November 1838 to Selah Willson, of Warren Co., GA, second to Zella Farrell, on 27 December 1855, in DeKalb Co. With his first wife, he had the following nine children: Harriett C. Almand, who died aged three years; John Walker Almand, who married Sarah Elizabeth Bacon; Henry Floyd Almand, who died in the Civil War; Mary Ann Almand, who married 1st Fielding Collins Farrell, 2nd William J. Gee; David M. Almand, who married Amanda G. Reagan; Nancy Jane Almand, who married Andrew Nathan Plunkett; Selah Ann Almand, who married John Henry Dabney; Thomas J. Almand, who married 1st Mary A. Marbut, 2nd Emma R. Alexander; and Susan F. Almand, who died in infancy. With his second wife, Henry had six more children, A. Judson Almand, who married Sarah Susan Stephenson; Susan J. Almand, who married Benjamin F. Moon; Tallulah B. Almand, who married Hillman A. Moon; Savannah T. Almand, who married Millard F. Dabney; Henry Pryor Almand, Jr., who married Elizabeth McDonald; and Graves Bennett Almand, who married Mary Lenora Almand.
Henry P. Almand, Sr., Rockdale, Ga.
Conyers, GA., January 13--(Special.)--
Henry P. Almand, Sr., one of Rockdale's most influential and highly esteemed citizens, died this morning at 2 o'clock, after an illness of several months. Mr. Almand was 82 years old, and leaves a wife and nine children, who are John W., Thomas J. and Henry P. Almand, Jr.; Mrs. Nannie Plunket, of Conyers, and Mrs. J. H. Dabney, Mrs. M. F. Dabney, Mrs. Mollie Gee and Gee B. Almand, of Ingleside, Ga. The funeral services will be held at the Baptist church tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Mr. Almand was a Christian gentleman, and was for a number of years senior partner of the firm of H. P. & D. M. Almand.
