She moved to New York City in the early 1960s, where she recorded with Tito Puente and other legends of salsa music. She passed away in 1992. Known to many as the Latina Judy Garland due to her strong voice, torrid love affairs, drug problems, poor financial management and large gay following. Considered to be one of the top female stars in Latin music ever, and her song "Puro Teatro" became after being used in the international hit by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown." A major motion picture life is being produced by actress Lauren Velez, who will also play her.
