Betty Florence (Hoffman) Corl, age 88 years, was the adoptive daughter of Edward H. and Annie (Burd) Hoffman was was raised by them in Millersburg. Her birth parents were Ida and Albert Woodward of Reedsville, Mifflin County, Pa. Albert was involved in a farming accident when he fell out of an apple tree and died in the Lewistown Hospital, Lewistown, Pa. Betty's mother was left unprepared with 9 children. Her sister and brother in-law Maude and John advised Ida to foster the kids out with a social service agency. Ida had no choice and did so. Betty was fostered for a while but was eventually adopted by Ed and Annie Hoffman. The Hoffmans were of Centre Township, Perry County stock but at the time had settled in Millersburg, Dauphin County, Pa, where Ed worked in the tool and dye factory.
Betty graduated from Millersburg High School, Class of 1937 and went on to nursing school at the Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing, Harrisburg, Pa. where she graduated in 1940.
There she met the love of her life and soul-mate William (Bill) H. Corl, Jr. They married December 23, 1941, just two weeks after Pearl Harbor. After the war Bill and Betty set up house keeping and Bill stayed in the army. She went with Bill to various army installations in Texas and Philadelphia. He spent a hitch in the Korean Conflict but that was after they had William E. Corl, 1947, Bonnie Lee Corl, 1948 and before he left Betty was about to have Robert Lynn Corl who was born while Bill was in Korea. Bob was almost a year old before Bill saw him.
Betty was mostly a stay at home mom in the fiftys and when Bill and Bonnie were almost teenagers went back to work as a nurst at the Polyclinic Hospital at Heckton Hall. This lasted about a year and she had to quit when Bill went back to the flower business around 1960. There she was a kind of a business manager for Corl's Flower Shop and Garden Center, on north 6th street in Harrisburg.
Betty sold the flower business in 1971 after Bill died at an early 51 years old. She went back to nursing where she worked until her retirement. At that time a great space was left in her life.
Betty then busied herself with her grandchildren. First it was Bill's three kids and after they were on their way to growing up she switched to Bob's 5 kids.
Later in life she started losing her short term memory. Her helath failing and the memory problem she entered Loylton of Harrisburg, assisted living where she spent her last year in comfort.
