Fernando Zobel
Birth: Aug. 27, 1924
Death: Jun. 2, 1984

Painter. Born of Spanish parents in Manila, Philippines, Zobel studied history and literature at Harvard. Fascinated by the work of Reed Champion, James Pfeufer, and Hyman Bloom, Zobel began painting in the style of the Boston painters. Later, Zobel became a painter, photographer and engraver of semi-abstract and modernist works, and had several solo exhibitions in New York. In the 1960's, Zobel sold his share of the family business and moved to Cuenca, a Spanish town that has become an artists' colony. There he founded the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in 1966. His many works include "Flight to Gerona," "Saeta 345," "Carroza," "Boy with Kite," "El Balcón II," "Jardín Seco," "Homenaje a Teodor Boehm," "Dos de Mayo IV" and "Tertulia Escurialense." He died of a heart attack while on holiday in Rome.  (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
