"Col. Hallonquist's death was received in Kaufman from Terrell Wednesday. His remains were brought to Kaufman by his brother, Dr. Frank Hallonquist and buried the same day. Hallonquist was a teacher in Kaufman for many years and a member of the most distinguished families of this county and of his home in South Carolina."

"Details on the death of Jas H Hallonquist, who killed himself on the 9th inst. by taking chloral.
Reason appears to be financial embarrassment.
He graduated from West Point, was a lieutenant in the US Army. During the war he was Chief of Artillery under Gen. Bragg. He never married and retired from business two years ago."
