James Albert Pike, Jr
Birth: Feb. 14, 1913
Oklahoma City
Oklahoma County
Oklahoma, USA
Death: Sep. 9, 1969, Israel

Religious Figure. One of America's more controversial religious figures of the 20th Century. Raised Roman Catholic, he later came to consider himself an agnostic. He graduated from Yale Law School, and worked for the Securities and Exchange Commission. After serving in Naval Intelligence in World War II, he joined the Episcopal Church, and decided to enter the priesthood. He was ordained in 1946, and served as chaplain of Columbia University and as Dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. His liberal views soon generated controversy. Nevertheless, he attracted a wide audience via television and writing. He openly challenged prevailing views on abortion, birth control, and civil rights. Pike was an early voice favoring the ordination of women. In 1958, despite conservative opposition, he was consecrated 5th Bishop of California. Bishop Pike continued to write and preach in support of unpopular positions. He wrote questioning the virginity of Mary, and the doctrine of the Trinity. For this, the Right Reverend Pike was censured by the Synod of Bishops in 1966. He soon resigned. Pike's son killed himself in 1966, and Pike soon entered into spiritism. He held a televised seance with medium Arthur Ford in 1967, attempting to reach his dead son. This profoundly embarrassed the Church. He detailed his experiences in his book, "The Other Side". Some of the Bishop's positions remain controversial to this day. In more than twenty books, he repeatedly bemoaned the "theological baggage" with which he considered the Church "burdened", and called for "fewer beliefs, more belief". He also opposed President John F. Kennedy's election bid, questioning whether a Roman Catholic should serve in the White House. He died under mysterious circumstances after becoming lost in the desert in Israel. (bio by: Bob Hufford)
