FROM A FRIEND
EDITORY BANNER: The writer was well acquainted with Joseph Hamilton Almand for more than a quarter of a century, and being present at his funeral services my mind naturally ran back over the years of my acquaintanceship with him and his manner of life.
His devotion to his children was something wonderful, and his strong desire to see them happily situated and prosperous seemed to occupy his thoughts above every thing else. Having a peculiar temperament and disposition very few people thoroughly understood him, and yet his honest and integrity were fixed principles of his life.
Having been raised in the country, his education was limited and his surroundings were different from many, and while he seemed at times indifferent to many things which were being advocated by others, yet upon all questions of morality and good government he was always on the right side, ready to fearlessly enunciate his convictions and to stand by them at the ballot box.
Well do I remember his peculiar anxiety and interest in the prohibition elections, how untiring and zealous he was, and when he was informed of the result how he shed tears of joy over the victory.
Being a member of the building committee of the M.E. Church at Conyers, he was always prompt and faithful in attending all the meetings of the committee and ever ready to do whatever was his duty in the matter. He was only a man, and therefore subject to shortcomings as other men, but his virtues were so prominent that we can but admire him for them.
Let us all emulate his virtues, and if he had short comings, may the mantle of charity effectually hide them, and may God console and comfort his loved ones left behind is the wish of a Friend.
