Bernard L. "Bernie" Simmons, 81, of Granger Township, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at Medina General Hospital.
He was born in Medina Township and was a lifetime Medina County resident and member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sharon Center. He was an industrial and commercial contractor and developer and was instrumental in attracting many industries to Medina since the 1950s. He was one of the founders of the Medina County Economic Development Corp. and was inducted into the Medina Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame in 1993. Mr. Simmons was a 32nd degree Mason, Valley of Cleveland, and an avid sportsman. He helped bring Little League to Medina and served as president and manager. Mr. Simmons was an industrial and commercial builder with Indelser Construction Co. and Gay Simmons & Sons Construction Co. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater.
Mr. Simmons is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Michael Griffith of California; sons and daughters-in-law, Bernard D. and Shirley Simmons of Cleveland Heights, Michael D. Simmons of Rocky River and Gene L. Luedy and Tim and Cindy Luedy, all of Medina; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert E. Simmons of Medina, Donald G. and Edie Simmons of Sharon Center and Harold E. and Betty Simmons of Granger Township.
He was preceded in death by is wife, Berdeta.
Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6462 Ridge Road, Sharon Center. The Rev. David Smith will officiate.
Burial: Spring Grove Cemetery, Medina.
