Balthazar DeHaart, arrived here in the year 1664 at New York, New York. Source Publication Code 8270 to assist in settlement of a portion of the United States as a pioneer.

Balthazar was a bachelor and wealthy shipping merchant. A lady, whom he assisted in aid to save her home after the abandonment of her lawful married husband who went back to Holland. Later on this husband died in India. This Lady was known as Margrietje Stuijvesant, the daughter of Rev. Balthazar Johannes Stuijvesant, and Margaret Hardenstein Stuijvesant. Margrietje's brother, Peter Stuijvesant was the first governor of New Amsterdam. Margrietje became the fiancee of Balthazar. Margrietje built up into a valuable estate the properties and business her husband left when he left the USA.

Balthazar died before the death of Margrietje's husband could be proven. In his Last Will and Testament, Bathazar provided for his two sons, Daniel de Haerdt, and Matthias Balthazer DeHart, and his fiancee, their mother, Margrietje. Balthazar eldest son was Daniel who was about the age of 3 years when his father died. After Balthazar's death, his brothers contested the Will, because of his never having had the opportunity to marry the mother of his two children, Margrietje.

The couple together in addition to their Wall Street farms in New York City, and other land and properties at the time was valued at three hundred and fifty million dollars.

Dr. Hatfield says that BALTHAZAR was engaged in the shipping business in New York as early as 1668, and was greatly prospered. He resided on the south side of Wall Street at his death.

[NOTE.--The above lands comprise the greater part of the village of Haverstraw, in Rockland County. The original owner was Balthazar De Hart, who obtained a Patent from Governor Philip Carterett, of New Jersey, in 1671, as it was then supposed to be within the limits of that Colony. When it was found to be in New York, a new Patent was obtained from Governor Thomas Dongan in 1685.Balthazar De Hart died in Dec. 1671, and left it to his brother, Jacobus De Hart, who procured the new Patent. In 1694 he sold the entire tract (except 10 acres) to Johanes Minnie, who was the first owner of Haverstraw that actually lived on the land.
