Lucile Lee Schatz, formerly of Spokane, Washington, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at the Quincy Convalescent Center.

She was born on May 18, 1918 in Great Falls, Montana to her parents Harry and Lena Latta. First born, her siblings are Faye, Jack, and Ruth. She had said of her siblings that they were close, and in her own words, were "in a tight group." Growing up in Bozeman and Spokane she said that her family "had lots of good times, but no money." She remembered in particular the Christmas at Pleasant Prairie where her father built the kids a yellow play table and chairs, with even a tablecloth and tin dishes.

After graduating from North Central High School in Spokane, Washington, she met Wilford "Bill" O. Schatz. Bill saw Lucile walking down the street wearing a big yellow hat, and she remembers him whistling at her. When asked what happened next, she always responded, "I whistled back." They married in 1941, made their home in Spokane and had two daughters, Suzanne and Jennifer.

Lucile enjoyed her time at home with the girls and said it was "lots of work, but lots of fun." In 1958, she took a job as one of the first original ten Meter Maids for the City of Spokane. She liked this job very much. Being one of the first meter maids ever in Spokane, she and her fellow workers were a novelty, "a thing to watch and a puzzlement." Later she took a job as an account clerk for the Water Department in Spokane. She retired from that position after twenty years of service in 1980.

She and Bill then enjoyed traveling to Mesa, Arizona for half the year to enjoy and sun, pool, socialization and the fierce competition on the shuffleboard court. They traveled much, and her favorite two trips were to "Hawaii and Washington DC." She was also an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Spokane, Washington.

Lucile will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband of 65 years Wilford O. Schatz of Quincy, daughter Suzanne Score and husband Dick of Everett, daughter Jennifer Doncaster and husband John of Quincy, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother Jack Latta and wife Patty of Spokane, sister Faye Chapman and husband Ashley of Los Altos, California, and sister Ruth Peterson and husband Joe of Lincoln City, Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Lena Latta.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 4th at 11 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Quincy, Washington, with graveside services to be at Fairmount Memorial Park in Spokane, Washington on Thursday, April 5th at 11 AM. Arrangements are made by Scharbachs Columbia Funeral Chapel in Quincy, Washington. Memorial gifts may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, 4202 N. Belt St., Spokane, WA 99205.
