Son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ross, of Big Stone City, joined the army forces May 29, 1918, and began training at Camp Lewis, Washington. Was soon transferred to Camp Kearney, California, and a short time later overseas, landing in France August 20, 1918. Was placed with the Co. G, 308th Infantry. 77th Division. Soon thereafter the division went into active service in the great drive in the Argonne Forest, and as a member of the famous "Lost Battalion" Private Ross was one of the men cut off from the balance of the division, and was killed on October 5, 1918, by being hit in the head with a machine gun bullet.
